This review contains spoilers.

As I sat down to read Nothing but Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw, I had high hopes. The premise promised a blend of horror and folklore, set against the backdrop of an ancient mansion. I was even drawn in by the striking cover design, which suggested a captivating story lurking within. But what I encountered was, quite frankly, the worst thing I’ve ever read.

From the very first page, the writing felt convoluted and disjointed. Khaw's prose is dense, filled with poetic flourishes that might work in other contexts but here serve only to obfuscate rather than illuminate. I found myself lost in a labyrinth of descriptions that seemed more concerned with style than substance. The characters, introduced with minimal depth, felt like shadows rather than people. I struggled to connect with any of them, and their motivations remained frustratingly vague.

The plot, which could have been a thrilling exploration of haunted spaces and dark secrets, instead meandered aimlessly. Events unfolded in a way that left me bewildered, often wondering what the point of it all was. I had hoped for moments of tension and fear, but they never arrived. Instead, I was left with a sense of dissatisfaction, as if I had invested my time in something that ultimately led nowhere.

And then, it abruptly ended, leaving me bewildered and frustrated. The ghost, a pivotal element that could have brought depth to the narrative, did nothing. It was as if the story had been building toward something - I was hoping for ANYTHING, only to fizzle out in an anticlimactic conclusion.

In the end, I had wasted my time with this book—the only reason I continued was because it was such a short book. If you’re looking for a horror story that combines rich character development and a captivating plot, I would strongly advise you to look elsewhere. Trust me—this is one book I wish I hadn’t read. It has inspired me to add a new section to the poll at the bottom.
