"The Frenzy" by Francesca Lia Block is a dark and atmospheric novel set in a near-future Los Angeles. The story follows Liv, a young woman struggling to navigate a world filled with uncertainty and danger. As a deadly illness known as the "Frenzy" sweeps through the city, infecting its inhabitants and causing widespread panic, Liv finds herself drawn into a web of intrigue and deception. Alongside her best friend, Anna, and a mysterious boy named Corey, Liv embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth behind the Frenzy and its origins. As they delve deeper into the heart of the epidemic, they uncover dark secrets that threaten to tear their world apart. Blending elements of dystopian fiction, romance, and suspense, "The Frenzy" is a haunting tale of love, loss, and the search for redemption in a world on the brink of collapse.
The only way this book can be best described is disappointing. This book would be considered to be perfect for the werewolf and vampire fandom at first glance, but once you read it, it does not bring that moment that draws people into the fantasy world.
It does bring together the slice of life and fantasy genres together well enough but does not supply a satisfying ending to a story of a young girl dealing with a traumatic experience, self discovery, all while battling a change she can't describe to anyone on the outside.
Though it is a catching story at first, this book does not bring much in the way of development for any characters except the main character, Liv, and brings her story to an abrupt, unsatisfying end.
