This review does not contain spoilers.

"Rise of Kyoshi" by FC Yee is a captivating addition to the Avatar universe, providing fans with an enthralling backstory for one of the series' most enigmatic characters, Kyoshi. The novel seamlessly integrates into the established canon, offering a deep dive into the world of Avatar and expanding upon its lore.

Yee's writing skillfully captures the essence of the Avatar universe, immersing readers in a richly detailed world filled with intricate cultures, elemental bending, and complex characters. From the bustling streets of Kyoshi Island to the treacherous political landscape of the Earth Kingdom, each setting is vividly brought to life, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in the story.

At the heart of "Rise of Kyoshi" is the titular character herself. Through Kyoshi's journey, readers are treated to a nuanced exploration of her growth from a humble servant girl to the formidable Avatar she becomes. As Kyoshi grapples with her newfound powers and the weight of her responsibilities, readers are drawn into a captivating narrative that keeps them engaged from start to finish.

I've been a fan of Avatar since the original anime came out. I was reluctant to read them as universe books are never as good as the original source material. I've never been so happy to be wrong! Kyoshi is currently my favorite avatar (sorry Aang) and this series is to thank for that. "Rise of Kyoshi" is a must-read for fans of the Avatar series, offering a richly rewarding experience that expands upon the lore while staying true to its spirit. With its well-written style, engaging characters, and immersive world-building, this novel is sure to delight both newcomers and longtime fans alike.
